Matt Damon's grueling physical journey in 'The Odyssey': A behind-the-scenes look (2026)

Matt Damon's latest project, Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey," has been a grueling experience, both physically and mentally. The actor, known for his versatility and endurance in Hollywood, has opened up about the demanding nature of the film, which has pushed him to his limits. In an interview, Damon revealed that the ambitious production required a significant physical transformation, with the actor losing a substantial amount of weight and undergoing a strict diet to achieve the desired lean but strong physique of Odysseus, the legendary king of Ithaca.

"He said he wanted me lean but strong," Damon explained. "It's a weird thing." This specific vision from Nolan, combined with the challenging filming conditions, made the role one of the hardest he has ever undertaken. The actor described the experience as an "expedition" rather than a movie, with demanding locations and unpredictable weather conditions pushing both the cast and crew to their limits.

"There was a lot of physical discomfort," Damon said. "It felt more like an expedition than a movie." Despite the punishing conditions, the actor praised Nolan for leading by example, noting that the director's dedication and perseverance were inspiring. "Directing is by far the hardest job on set," he said. "When you're out there kind of in the middle of a storm and you're soaked and you're cold and you're like, 'Man, I'm in discomfort right now,' it is helpful to turn and see the person with the harder job ... looking like a drowned rat, just as cold, just as wet, and never complaining."

Damon's commitment to the role was evident in his significant weight loss and strict diet. "I literally, just because of this other thing I did with my doctor, stopped eating gluten," he said. "I used to walk around between 185 and 200 pounds. And I did that whole movie at 167 pounds." This lifestyle overhaul, which has been "life-changing," has transformed how he feels on a daily basis, despite the challenges it presented. "It's just a complete, complete lifestyle change," he said. "There's no planning it. Any other time I tried to do something like that, it was always like, 'Well, my time, my workouts' … and this was like … just put your foot on the gas and that's it. And that's the only way to do it, and eat a little less."

The actor's dedication to the role and his willingness to push himself to the limit are a testament to his professionalism and commitment to his craft. "The Odyssey" is a prime example of why he is considered one of the most versatile and enduring actors in Hollywood, and his performance is sure to be a highlight of the film. While the grueling conditions and demanding role may have been challenging, Damon's perseverance and dedication to the craft are a reminder of the power of hard work and determination.
