However, despite its impressive lineup, San Sebastián has often been overshadowed by its larger European counterparts, such as Cannes and Venice.
The festival's unique charm lies in its size and intimate atmosphere. Unlike the massive film festivals, San Sebastián allows for genuine connections between filmmakers, industry professionals, and local artists. This sense of community is further enhanced by the city's world-renowned cuisine and the inimitable charm of its bay-set Basque setting.
One of the key strengths of the festival, according to director José Luis Rebordinos, is its unwavering commitment to its core identity. Instead of trying to mimic other festivals, San Sebastián embraces its niche, offering interesting industry events like the Europe-Latin America Co-Production Forum and the Investors' Conference.
Rebordinos emphasizes that the festival's size strikes a perfect balance. It has a large enough audience to attract industry attention and critical acclaim, yet it remains small enough to maintain a personal and welcoming atmosphere. This unique position allows San Sebastián to foster a sense of humility, as reflected in its slogan, 'We are the smallest of the greats.'
The festival's industry events have become a hub for professionals, with the Creative Investors' Conference and the Europe-Latin America Co-Production Forum attracting a growing number of participants. As the festival prepares for its 74th edition, the transition to a new director is underway. José Luis Rebordinos, who has led the festival for 15 years, will retire, passing the reins to Maialen Beloki, currently the deputy director. This leadership change is seen as a natural progression, with Rebordinos expressing his satisfaction with the appointment and his commitment to a smooth transition.
